Starting October 30, 2017 Ali‘iolani School launched The Morning Mile™ program. The Morning Mile™ is a before-school walking program that gives children the chance to start each day in an active way while enjoying fun, music and friends. The Morning Mile™ has been successfully implemented in over 250 schools and camps throughout the United States, Canada, Cayman Islands and Japan at every age level.
The goal of the program is to:
-
Have kids arrive early to participate thus decreasing tardies.
-
Have students expend youthful energy during the Morning Mile which allows them to arrive at class calm, focused, and ready to learn.
-
Create opportunities for students to be excited for school in general since children are excited about the program.
-
Create time for students to have quality social time with friends before school and be able to earn rewards through the program.
-
Allow students who are dropped off early to have something productive to do instead of just sitting in front of their classroom.
With all of our goals and the Morning Mile™ implemented:
-
Parents may note a rise in their children's self esteem.
-
Parents may also observe a new interest in healthy eating habits
Faculty and Staff, Students and Families are welcome to join our Morning Mile 7:30-7:50 a.m. daily (weather permitting).
HIDOE Social Media Coverage!
Lindsay Chambers and Eliot Honda visited our campus on Friday, October 5, 2018 to produce a video promoting our Morning Mile program. She was dressed in an inflatable sumo suit, while our very own Mr. Passantino was dressed in an inflatable T-Rex costume. Their video was posted on the HIDOE's social media account. The last video they produced had over 19,000 views! We had about 95% of our students walking the morning they visited. Many of them were joined by their parents.
Video from HIDOE's Facebook page posted on October 9, 2018.

Ali‘iolani Makes the News!
On January 11, 2018, Ali‘iolani was featured on Hawaii News Now with a live shot of our Morning Mile program. Our principal, teachers and students were interviewed about the great benefits the Morning Mile program provides.
